Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Third Time’s the Charm: How Many Repaints Does a 1967 Camaro SS Need?

Posted July 09, 2013 12:00 AM by dstrohl

It takes a lot of drive and determination to see a collector car restoration project through from start to finish. Aside from the obvious obstacles, i.e., money and time, there's the frustration of having to repeat a task over and over until it's exactly right, or having to spend days repairing, rebuilding or refinishing something that should by all accounts only take a few hours.

Sometimes life just gets in the way, too.

So...How did he know the color was off?

and...If he had a known "good" sample, why didn't he shoot one of the old fenders, instead of painting the whole car, to get the color right?

He also should have used a single stage acrylic, (likely the original material), rather than a base coat/clear coat system.

No wonder it took him 2 years.

It does look good though.

I bought a 1968 RS, dark blue, in September 1967. I ordered it because I wanted disc brakes and the show room models didn't have them, I had driven cars with discs in the UK for several years before coming here. The dealers didn't think people would want discs, but when my car arrived the dealer didn't want me to take it away, people were demanding the wheels on the ordinary models, and settling for the RS.
