Carried Along on a Potato Diet

Posted June 24, 2007 8:00 AM

While fuel cell advocates are quick to note the absence of pollutants, most fuel-cell vehicles burn hydrogen produced from fossil fuels or by the energy-intensive electrolysis of water. Now, Technology Review reports that researchers have isolated enzymes to produce hydrogen directly from starch. The technology may eventually lead to a solution for hydrogen storage.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical device in which hydrogen and oxygen from the air react to produce electricty with the only by-products being water and heat. A fuel cell vehicle is zero-emission. What you're talking about is hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that burn the hydrogen to get energy. These hydrogen ICEs, while cleaner than the ICE vehicles we drive today, do produce emissions.

Actually, if you read the article, what he's talking about is a means to produce the hydrogen for use in a fuel cell. There's nothing in there about combustion.
