While fuel cell advocates are quick to note the absence of pollutants, most fuel-cell vehicles burn hydrogen produced from fossil fuels or by the energy-intensive electrolysis of water. Now, Technology Review reports that researchers have isolated enzymes to produce hydrogen directly from starch. The technology may eventually lead to a solution for hydrogen storage.
