Brooklyn's Shipping Container Boom

Posted February 01, 2014 12:00 PM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Brooklyn is renowned for its beautiful brownstone buildings, many of which have become mixed-use facilities over the many decades of their existence. But now, the brownstone structure might go the way of the greener and sustainable shipping container. Brooklyn's Williamsburg area is now home to a new 5,000 sq ft structure that is being constructed from 21 separate shipping containers stacked on top of one other and, in some cases, split down the middle. While the building is being touted as a family residence, the commercial office space application possibilities are enormous.

I certainly salute the idea of clever reuse of any material but the verdict on shipping container versus brownstone is premature at best. As the Wikipedia link implies, the nominal age for a brownstone building is about one and a quarter century. I'm not sure if this chopped shipping container design will out last a thirty year old mortgage.

It is true that most of Brooklyn are noted for its beautiful brownstone structures, BUT not this particular section or area of Williamsburg, Brooklyn!

The subject area sits right next to the BQE Expway, where one can find the buildings are mostly of brick or brick veneer constructions Not brownstones! The buildings in this area either used a multi-story dwellings / residential apartments or warehouses /industrial type of applications.

Shipping containers beside being very durable, are cheap and commonly used by our military personnel as convertible offices, and living quarters during their field deployments overseas..

With the new socialist mayor, I would think that a person in NYC wouldn't require much more space than a coffin.

Our community uses old shipping containers for the Sheriff's storage and our CERT storage. They're pretty stout and we feel they'll be earthquake proof.

A few years ago, I thought of buying a duplex with about 1/2 acre of flat land (on the side of a long driveway). I had a plan to buy shipping containers, cut out doors and windows, link them together and make a homeless shelter for our Vets.

I visited a cabin on a "ranch" that was a couple of storage sheds joined together in an "L" shape and finished out on the inside. Very cozy.
