in the 1980s, scanning the local want ads for muscle cars was a weekly
ritual. Regardless of whether or not I had money, I could easily
formulate any scenario necessary to justify looking for another car.
Truth be told, I can still do it today. It doesn't matter how many
unfinished projects I have, it always seems that just one more would be
better.
One Monday afternoon in the mid-1980s, while perusing a fresh edition of the Want Ad Press,
I came upon what seemed like the deal of a lifetime. It was a 1967
Buick GS 340 for just $75! It had to be a typo, right? Though it's now
three decades ago, $75 was ridiculously cheap even then.
Determined to learn more, I called the number in the ad, and the
phone rang forever with no answer. This had to be someone's idea of a
practical joke. The problem was, I had to know for sure. I called twice
daily for the rest of the week, but never got a human on the phone. Then
after two weeks, the ad was renewed - the cruelty. Still, I could not
get anyone on the phone to confirm the actual existence of the car.
