Getting Prosthetics Fit for Service

The rapid evolution of lower limb prosthetics owes much to advances in miniaturized sensors, mechatronics, and other technologies. However, such progress is of little interest to the user if the fit is poor and/or painful. A solution devised at University of Southampton, UK, offers relief in the form of an intelligent electronic liner that measures forces at the interface between the stump and prosthetic socket to improve the fit. Data from embedded sensors can be used to initially optimize socket fit, while continuous monitoring by a wireless interface can help the user adjust as needed to prevent pressure ulcer formation.
