Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

How Does the 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger Stack Up Against its Modern Equivalents?

Pathfinder Tags: Dodge. Challenger Hellcat Hemi

The past, sometimes, is more fondly remembered in the present. While most of us pine for the days of cheap gas and affordable muscle cars, it's no secret that today's muscle cars are capable of jaw-dropping performance off the dealer's showroom floor, yet still come complete with a factory warranty and are capable of reasonable functionality as daily drivers. All the hype surrounding the upcoming release of the 707-horsepower SRT Hellcat Challenger got us thinking: How does this modern muscle car stack up against the 1970 Dodge Challenger, equipped with the legendary 426-cu.in. "Street Hemi" engine?

"Foul," the most astute Mopar fans would cry, "The Elephant engine was normally aspirated, while Dodge is using forced induction chicanery to squeeze 707 horses from the Hellcat." Point well taken, and to that end, we're also considering last year's top-shelf Challenger SRT in the comparison, which sported a normally aspirated 392-cu.in. V-8 beneath its hood. In fact, this Challenger is likely the most direct analog for the Hemi-powered 1970 Challenger, but we're including the Hellcat simply because it is, at the moment, the pinnacle of the Challenger product line, horsepower-wise.

Who wins? 1970 Challenger Hemi vs 2015 Challenger Hellcat.

The 440 was the top engine in '70....try that with 2x4-barrels on a high rise intake against the 392 hemi SRT....

I for one can't see why these comparisons are so hard to do. Simply take one older vehicle rated at XXX HP that weighs XXXX pounds and run it head to head against its most modern counterpart that is of equal hp and weight.

If the newer vehicle doesn't weigh as much ballast it until it is sharing the same weight and weight distribution ratios as the old one.

One thing that really bumbed us out when we were kids, was the sudden drop in horsepower reported by all the magazines... Turns out that before the Govmt. got involved. Horsepower was measured from the back of the engine. The Govmt., said nope! measure from the wheel. So what we thought was a case of drastic pussing out on HP turned out to be because they used a more accurate form of measurement.

Especially if it's a 1968 Mustang with a 428 Cobra Jet, rated at 335 horsepower? I think they were measuring Clydesdales.

Technically speaking, the Boss 429 is not a true Hemi, but has "semi- hemispherical combustion chambers". In reality, who cares ! That is one sweet car.

FWIW -- in the 1970 Challenger, the HEMI was the highest output engine:

425 hp = 426/2x4BBL HEMI

390 hp = 440/6BBL RB engine

375 hp = 440/4BBL RB engine

Yep! The 440 wedge engine was a dog compared to the Hemis.

A buddy just paid $6,000.00 USD for a bare Hemi block for a rod he's building.

" ...440 cubic inches were obtained by boring the 426 block to 4.32 inch from the 4.25 inches. The 3.75 inch stroke remained the same."...

By using different bores and strokes you could go from a 383 to a 413 to a 426 wedge to a 440. It was done by making the engine block higher also known as "decked". They were all good powered engines and even the lowly 383 was respectable.

My first care after Viet Nam was a 68 Road Runner with a 383. It was quick but gas was also only $0.34 a gallon for high test and I only paid $0.18 once when I found a "Gas War".

The real comparison I'd like to see is the Challenger Hellcat versus half of everything I own, which the wife would get in the divorce if I came home with one.

Might still be worth it

Well, in that case, buy two. That way, when she divorce's you, you will still have one!

Well it's true that the modern cars can go like hell right off the dealer's lot. A friend gave me a ride in his 2014 Camaro SS - holy crap that thing is fast! The traction control is very hard to bypass so when it launches, it REALLY launches. Zero to 60 in 4+ sec.! When we got back home and I change my under shorts, I told him he should not do that to an old man! (more than once a week) I love the old muscle cars but the new ones need to be respected.

Depending on how fast it was going, probably all the way on top.

It's not just about HP today. The new cars can make gobs of power AND they get it to the ground! They also handle and stop a heck of a lot better than the older cars. I've had some really hairy moments trying to bring a 60's era car to stop!
