Private Sector May Spur Needed Upgrades

Posted September 09, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

A concise description of the state of the deteriorating U.S. water infrastructure might read: so much work to be done, but not nearly enough public money to spend on it. What can be done to solve this critical problem? Part of the answer could be public-private partnerships. PPPs are "a well-established funding vehicle in many parts of the world," notes Water Utility Infrastructure Management. PPPs in the U.S. water sector could be set to take off thanks to a recent move by the federal government aimed at lowering the long-term financing costs of water projects, according to the article.

So,

Our elected officials are being bribed by big business to funnel money to special interests and the infrastructure is left to deteriorate because of a dysfunctional unethical congress.

The taxpayers take it in the shorts again.

PPPs are an expensive way of deferring capital funding that only appeals to a politicians who will not still be in power to face the longer term costs. The UK has gone down this route to fund hospitals and schools in the last few years. Now the repayments are deflecting funding away from front line spending so we have the crazy situation of having to close classrooms and hospital wards because the funding needed to run them is paying not just to build them but also for the profits of the suppliers.

For inexplicable reasons PPPs are not listed as public debt. But they are a public debt. Politicians have persuaded the public that they are bringing public debt down, but they are only obscuring it, inefficiently, and their cronies are reaping the benefits of those ineficiencies.

We were told that the 3 rounds of stimulus spending was going to fix our crumbling infrastructure.

The money was spent. Where did it go?

No. I don't want to go there.

Report: Repairing U.S. bridges would cost $140 billion ...

Did you believe it when he said it? If you did, I may have some choice property I'd be willing to sell you at a loss.

I just hope that airplane I'm riding on tomorrow stays together.

We only have to tax the rich people that make more than $40 K a year, and finally these problems will be fixed for good.
