Don't Forget to "Look Before You Pump"

Posted November 05, 2014 12:00 AM by KevinCassidy

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) has been active in educating consumers about the variety of fuels available at the pump, and how to identify the right fuel for your outdoor power equipment.

E-15, or 15% Ethanol is a blend of gasoline that contains no less than 10% and up to 15% ethanol (by volume). E-15 gasoline was approved by the EPA for use in cars that were manufactured after 2001. However, the EPA prohibited the use of E-15 in any 'non-road" vehicles, including outdoor power equipment.

Gasoline that is blended with more than 10% ethanol is illegal for use in outdoor power equipment. Using E-15 gasoline in outdoor power equipment could result in permanent damage to the engine and might void the manufacturer's warranty.

"Gasoline that is blended with more than 10% ethanol is illegal for use in outdoor power equipment."

Hmmm... had never heard that before. Is this applicable everywhere? Australia, Japan... Antarctica? Can the statement be substantiated?

I don't know about everywhere in the USA, but around here it's difficult to find fuel (gasoline) that isn't marked 10% ethanol.

You are absolutely right Doorman there is nothing but E15 available unless you are near an airport. As I understand it it must be made available to the aircraft industry in non-ethanol just so the problems associated with those types of fuels don't creep up on aircraft owners. I just hate to pay 8-12 dollars a gal, for fuel but it beats the alternative of 6-8 dollars a quart for Stiel or Tru fuel. I guess we have no other alternative but to submit to the overseers and pay the price. I cry every time I start my snow blower or my chainsaws but it beats the alternative of repairs on my equipment. I have switched my 15kw Kohler generator over to propane. I won't have that problem there, just got to figure a way to run chainsaws on propane without big tank or hose to drag around wife says I drag my knuckles enough as it is now. Duke.

Usually you can find eth free at marinas as well. Still cost more that E10, E15 but $4-5 a gal instead of $8-12

Yea tried that our marina closed down for the season two weeks ago and last price on pump was 11.00 per because of local ordnance's for fuel on waterways. Since it is the main source of water for Indianapolis other than wells all around town. They sometimes just make it hard to like city governments or officials

$11 bucks? Wowza!

Spot check: Unlead regular self serve gasoline(E10) in Cheyenne WY: $3.05/gallon. This down from $3.50 on 12 September.

No marinas in Callfornia, I am afraid--That E-10 beats the crap out of older outboards with the old hoses, that are not E-10 resistant. Look around , and you will find a website that gives a list of all Non-Alcohol gas providers, by state. That could be of help

At many gas stations around us, the highest octane fuel (93 blend) does not have ethanol in the fuel. You have to check though - it varies by supplier, so it pays to ask. Some stations have ethanol in all their grades. But if it's pure gasoline, then your additional cost may only be $0.50 - $0.70/gallon over regular grade.

I always find these types of threads funny being the excuses given and the money spent to avoid something that is easy to adapt most any piece of equipment to if it's not already designed so by the manufacture is amazing.

My personal favorites are the guys who spend a fortune on non ethanol gas to avoid spending the few tens of dollars at best it costs to refit most any type of carbureted engine over to ethanol compatible gaskets and fuel lines in its fuel systems.

BTW I run E10 and higher in everything I own great and small and have never had a single issue from it despite having a 120 +F temperature differential from warmest most humid summer day to the coldest hell hath frozen over hard winter nights.
