Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The $5,000 Challenge: What Would You Buy?

Posted December 02, 2014 10:00 AM by dstrohl

It's inevitable: Pen a story on the latest record-breaking auction price of a competition Ferrari, rare muscle car or restored to better-than-new-condition classic, and comments pour in about how the average Joe is priced out of the hobby. While the days of the $500 Mustang or the $1,000 Alfa Romeo have long since passed, we wondered exactly what $5,000 (a completely arbitrary, but reasonable-by-modern-standards price) would buy someone shopping in our own online classifieds.

First, we set the search filters, specifying a price between $1 and $5,000; a year of manufacture between 1900 and 1990; ads with prices; and ads that contained photos. Doing so produced a total of 370 ads, including 104 from private sellers and 266 from dealers. While the bulk of these ads are from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s (227 out of 370), a quick glance showed that there was still plenty of inventory worth a further look.

See what $5,000 gets you in today's classic auto market.

I had a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang, Cleveland heads, Windsor block, Holly dbl pumper, turbo hyro trans, and it was $3402.00 off the lot. Sadly to say after many hundreds of thousands of miles, 265,000. I pulled the motor, tore it down, .8000 movement btwn cylinder walls, I sold it. It was rebuilt, then wrapped around a tree.

Had I had any indication the car would be worth today. I would have garaged it and not raced or driven it. I raced the shit out of it. In 1970 Gas was $.19-9/10/g

I blew through 5 gallons in one race, and won!!! We did not swap pinks back then, just bragging rights for that week or days. B4 the next race. Just fun.

I beat a lot of cars and out ran many troopers back when I was younger. Cops never could keep up. Only issue with the Stang, after 135MPH the steering was a serious issue. Popping off the PS belt, no issues way past 135. Tough under 40 though. The memories, and one day these will go by the way of dimentia in a cpl years.
