Certified Green Products Win Out

Posted January 26, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

It's a given that today's environmentally-conscious consumers prefer green products, everything from apparel and electronics to personal care and household cleaning items. But which green claims are most effective? In a survey of more than 1,000 consumers that generated almost 42,000 comparisons of various green product claims, Underwriters Laboratories found that certified claims won out in every category. The survey also showed that consumers reacted negatively to claims that were over technical, overly generic, or used a green logo without qualifying language.

"It's a given that today's environmentally-conscious consumers prefer green products..." I don't know that it's a given, but I agree it's an accurate generalization.

At my current employ, the purchasing agent orders Green whenever possible, including the Chuck Norris bathroom tissue.

Did you know... in 2005 a project was put into motion to add Chuck Norris' face to Mount Rushmore? The project had to be abandoned when it was discovered the granite wasn't hard enough.

The real test though comes at the checkout!!

A survey is great for testing market sentiment, but compare this to the surveys for "buy local" and how the predictions have not been supported. Look at the USA manufacturing sector where there are multiple examples put forward by contributors to this forum citing examples of offshore competition shutting down local industry. (Same in Australia with the imminent collapse of our total auto sector and many other manufacturing sectors.)

The almighty dollar talks.

People often say that they want "green", but that someone else should be the ones to implement it or wear the cost burden.

The NIMBY approach.

I want green power, but the wind turbines should not be visible!

I want to be in a vibrant community, but you cannot use river water to irrigate as it might upset the water grasses.

I'll stop here before the ranting starts.
