Bio-lubricants to Top $2.6 Billion

Posted December 09, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

The global market for bio-lubricants - everything from motor oil to mechanical greases - is expected to top $2.6 billion by 2020, according to a new market research study. So-called green lubricants are fast gaining in popularity because of their biodegradability, constant viscosity, lower emissions, and high flash point. The top raw material for these lubricants is vegetable oil, such as palm oil and castor oil, with demand exceeding 450,000 metric tons last year. However, the high cost to produce compared with conventional synthetic lubricants and a limited application scope are expected to hold back growth in the near term.
