Driverless car beats race driver for first time

Posted February 14, 2015 11:43 AM by Bayes

I thought this was a pretty cool indication of how far autonomous driving has come. I'm really looking forward to self driving cars.

Driverless Car Beats Race Driver

Driverless cars now out-perform skilled racing drivers, engineers at Stanford University have shown, after pitting their latest model against a track expert. The team has designed a souped-up Audi TTS dubbed 'Shelley' which has been programmed to race on its own at speeds above 120 mph at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Northern California.

When they tested it against David Vodden, the racetrack CEO and amateur touring class champion, Shelley was faster by 0.4 of a second. To get the cars up to speed, the Stanford team have been studying drivers, even attaching electrodes to their heads to monitor brain activity in the hope of learning which neural circuits are working during difficult manouvres.

Isn't that just an oval track????

Pretty meaningless test...

Here's a video where they are testing the car on the track. Definitely not just an oval track.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxHcJTs2Sxk

I think they are trying to capture what I would call the "feel of the road". Living in the Northeast U.S. nowadays requires a lot of "feel" since the roads are often icy or snowy. Growing up here I've learned all kinds of visual and physical cues to help me avoid ending up in a snowbank (most of the time). The problem is I couldn't really tell you what they are, they are basically instinct at this point. So how do you teach a car to develop this feel?

Racing is very similar. It also requires a feel. You have to know the moment the car will lose it's grip on the track around a turn and push the car right to the edge of it. I think the fact they were able to teach a car how to develop this feel better than a seasoned race driver is impressive and bodes well for autonomous winter driving.

This all can't happen soon enough as far as I'm concerned. I absolutely hate driving (except once in a while).

Ok, that's impressive then. Or had the software been allowed to 'learn' the track?

It would be interesting to compare on an unseen track.

(I did try to look at the video ,but the car just seemed to be turning left all the time.. that's why I thought 'oval'

Pick your tail up, lol, it was a valid point. I hadn't thought of that till you mentioned it. Then I looked it up and found that video. I think there is still a ways to go with self driving cars, but I also think it's only a matter of time before we have an autopilot feature, especially on the highway.

Yeah, a feature to stop tailgating would save lives. ABS probably saved lives at first... But now, every idiot who has never ridden a motorbike thinks you tread on the middle pedal and it stops instantaneously.

Doppler radar stopping you getting too close would help.

Does this mean all of the crazy Audi drivers who cut me up, race past me at 100 mph and jump traffic lights will finally be under control or are Audi computers just as mad as their owners?

With this development I'm looking forward to not needing to own one any more. Just dial up an automatic taxi. Is there an app for it yet?

What an astonishing speed! But I suggest to develop the safety of the car first.
