Cloud Computing for the Industrial Internet of Things?

Posted July 27, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Cloud computing is broadly accepted for the enterprise, but less so for factory automation. ISA Intech details pros and cons of using the cloud for industrial processes. For example, the public cloud might arbitrarily shift its allocation of resources to balance its services. But that's unacceptable for real-time automation, which needs reliable high-speed availability. Private cloud services can be a good answer however. They can provide historian, analytics, and even complete Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) functions. The article predicts that as cloud computing becomes better understood, it will be a useful tool for automation engineers.

Cloud Computing for the Industrial Internet of Things is the perfect storm for disaster.

This will be fertile ground for hackers, thieves and disgruntled employees.

Come on people! Hackers are driving Jeeps into ditches thanks to Cloud Computing and the Internet of Things.

This is like handing your virgin daughter to a child molester and saying, "here she is. Take good care of her."

I agree. After the latest deep attacks on federal servers, some of which contain information of national security, putting industry (or even your personal data) in someone else's hands is simply insane.

This is just another example of rushing to the candy store to get the latest and greatest treat only to discover who the real sucker is.

What's worse is that if you do not want to use the cloud you often have to jump through hoops to avoid it.

Has anyone heard the phrase "don't put all your eggs in one basket".

For pities sake... stop using the silly "Of Things"...

Every damn thing in the universe is "of things"

If you keep wasting words we'll eventually run out

I know a number of countries that appear to be already running out.

Most of the people's names don't have any vowels in them.

I think the Salvation Army or some other group was trying to set up a relief program called Operation Vowel Movement if I remember correctly.

Never fear.

Every time a spam bot spews gibberish here, I collect all of it and run it through the LynDoor™Industries Save-A-Word De-constructor.

That gives us a bank of letters to be used to reconstruct all the extinct words in the English language vocabulary.

We desperately need more A's, N's, Y's, U's, H's, O's, K's, T's, P's, S's. E's, and L's, as many places have run completely out of, "please", and "thank you" already.

We plan to store them in the cloud until needed. They will be completely secure there.
