Electromagnetic Launch and Recovery System for Aircraft Carriers

Posted August 18, 2015 9:39 AM by wagman262

We have a terrific feature article on an electromagnetic system that the Navy will commission next year with the first Ford Class aircraft carriers. The system will replace the steam catapult for aircraft launch and recovery. Have a read! The link is below!

It worked this time.

Having spent quite a bit of time in between steam cats, I can say the linear motor system is amazing and just about cuts the cycle time in half. I suppose they incorporate some sort of "soft start" to keep the airframe intact.

Thanks.

'Electromagnetic launch and recovery'

.

'The system will replace the steam catapult for aircraft launch and recovery...'

Hmmm, using a catapult (steam or otherwise) for recovery would be interesting to watch...from a distance. Maybe they have theirs eyes set on regenerative braking....

It is an amazing idea. I am a little concerned about very high electro-magnetic forces and a high corrosion environment. This could be a maintenance nightmare. All those induced eddy currents and I would guess there would be lots of dissimilar metals in close proximity. Hopefully there will be lots of insulation and water proving otherwise poor jack-tar will be out there chipping rust and taring the decks again.

Just another system that can be hacked (see the automotive industry).

Even if the control systems on a steam cat were compromised the crew still trains how to react if the controls are off line.

Don't think for a minute the enemy isn't watching these advancements with an evil grin on their faces.
