Batteries Ready to Turn the Corner

Posted September 12, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

As the rest of the electronics industry has advanced by leaps and bounds, performance of the humble battery improves incrementally at best. Battery technology has remained relatively stagnant for more than a decade, while the impending explosion of the Internet of Everything (IoE) has increased the clamor for a more robust solution. This article reviews battery technology, looking at current champions like lithium-ion, along with flawed alternatives such as lithium-sulfur and lithium-silicon, as well as graphene-based designs and up-and-coming alternatives such as magnesium-ion. It discusses the benefits and drawbacks of each choice and tries to derive order out of the resulting chaos.

I was not aware that the 10:1 or better jump that lithium based battery tech made over the older lead acid in terms of storage capacity per volume and mass and charge/discharge rates was considered an incremental improvement.

Granted I do vaguely recall reading about battery advances way back in middle high in the later 1980's where some company was talking about a battery tech that they were developing that was just around the corner from being mass produced that would be a 100:1 or more improvement in energy density and charge discharge capabilities over lead acid batteries.

I agree. Try building a drone that can fly for 10 minutes using D cells.
