Lean Manufacturing Must Remain Flexible

Posted July 24, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Demand for electronic products — from car infotainment systems to the smartphones that have become a lifeline to the world — has exploded, challenging both OEMs and contractors to find ways to cope. Mentor Graphics has produced a series of white papers, examining principles of lean manufacturing as a path to what the industry calls "Factory 4.0," responding quickly to changing process conditions and making any product at any time. This entry in the series specifically addresses accepting the need for flexibility. Engineers must consider how to implement any necessary process change to minimize its effect on production, product delivery, and cost.

Instant gratification has its limits, when faced with reality.

"Want" has far overshadowed "need" in today's world.

It doesn't make for a better society.

In my experience, implementing a "classical" 6-sigma/lean manufacturing system into your company is extremely difficult to do because it is so time-consuming and disrupts normal operations. That is why many attempts to do so often fail.

The best way, IMHO, is to utilize the more productive, common-sense elements of 6-sigma and adapt them to your own system, leaving the more esoteric portions alone.
