So began the relationship between a spaceship captain from Earth and his nemesis Dr. Morbius's robot on the planet Altair 4 in the 1956 classic Forbidden Planet. In the six decades since, science fiction has portrayed computers and robots that speak human language naturally, while science has struggled to duplicate the feat in the real world. Computers can speak, but their understanding has always struggled to surpass their programming. Now, a new algorithmic method for representing natural language has brought that Holy Grail within reach. This article examines the technology's progress and persistent limitations, as well as the applications that cry out for its widespread adoption.
