Dubai's Towering Inferno Kindles Cladding Fears

Posted February 20, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

A New Year's Eve fire which broke out in a 63-story Dubai hotel high-rise has heated up the debate over the popular utilization of polyurethane and aluminum composite cladding on many commercial buildings in the UAE city, including many of its tallest towers. Having spread over 40 floors, the incident resulted in 60 injuries and raised major concerns over its having spread so quickly. The non-fire-resistant composite exterior panels which are made up of a thermoplastic core sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum, are said to be used for their fine aesthetics and durability, but they also have a propensity to burn easily. In this major feature from World Architecture News, the experts weigh in on the future of this dangerous cladding in Dubai and elsewhere.

Sheathe the high-rise buildings in highly flammable(1) cladding? "Brilliant!" Let's go one step further and make the foundations out of C4 and ANFO(2)!

Notes:

  1. For you non-Americans, when I say 'flammable,' I of course mean 'inflammable.' For my fellow Americans, please remember, 'flammable' and 'inflammable' mean THE SAME THING.
  2. Amonium Nitrate Fuel Oil, one of the favorite 'boom powders' used by the Mythbusters.
