The Eshima Ohashi Bridge

Posted March 07, 2016 12:00 AM by Chelsey H

If you're looking for an interesting experience while traveling through Japan you might want to travel along the Eshima Ohashi Bridge!

Connecting the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato, the bridge is a little over a mile long and crosses Lake Nakaumi. Eshima Ohashi Bridge is 44 meters high, making it the third highest ridge-frame bridge in the world. The design allows for tall fishing ships to pass underneath without needing to disrupt traffic.

It may also be one of the world's scariest bridges.

While it looks like a rollercoaster from some angles, there is only a gradient of 5.1 percent on the Tottori Prefecture side and 6.1 percent on the Shimane Prefecture side.

Would you take the ride? What's the scariest bridge you've been on?

I could see a James Bond car chase scene taking place on it.

A number of years ago, maybe 15 or 20 years, I was driving on some scenic backroads in West Virgina when suddenly this bridge was in front of me. It actually looked worse in real life than in this photo. I held my breath as I drove across it, expecting it to collapse when I got halfway across.

It is not just the back roads of West Virginia. About 50 years ago, when they were installing the I-70 highway in the vicinity of Wheeling, WV, there were several bridge construction/repair projects going on. One of then across the Ohio River was particularly scary. The road surface was a decrepit combination of timbers and deteriorating concrete. The side rails between the cars were railroad ties not too tightly secured to the roadway. If I remember correctly it was a suspension or similar bridge and it would move vertically and horizontally with the least bit of traffic and wind.

I once had one of my friends in our car refuse to cross it..

As was the case in WV, it took a long time to finish this project.

Good Luck, Old Salt

This happened to the Tower Drive Bridge (Most Northern Part of I-43, now called the Leo Frigo bridge) in Green Bay, Wisconsin about (2) years ago.

The acidic soil eroded the steel away, interesting enough, one company that won the contract, was 10's of millions of dollars under any competitor.

That raised questions, but. This contractor not only came under budget, but also finished way ahead of schedule, which made the company huge bonuses.

This next photo looks photo shopped, but it isn't just the camera angle.

Given that I have major bridge and tunnel phobia, just about any bridge or tunnel makes me go spare. When I drove on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel I gripped the steering wheel so tightly I nearly broke it to bits.

For me, the worst bridge, oddly enough, is the New River Gorge bridge in West Virginia. This bridge is so high you can BASE jump from it. It's the height that gets me ... did I mention that I also have a fear of heights? When I lived in Pittsburgh and drove to East Tennessee to visit family, I had to go over the NRG bridge or make an enormous detour. Never got easier, only got scarier.

Some day I'd like to see the Millau Viaduct. No way I'd drive over it, though.
