Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

What's the Best Generation of Impala?

Posted March 09, 2016 9:00 AM by dstrohl

Chevrolet's Impala has been around for a long, long time. Debuting in 1957 as a 1958 model, the Impala soldiered on (in its first life) from 1958 through 1985, evolving to include convertible, hardtop, coupe, sedan and even station wagon variants through portions of its lifespan. From 1994 through 1996, a high-output version of the Chevrolet Caprice was rebadged as the Impala SS, and in 1999 the model returned to the regular Chevrolet lineup as a sensible four-door family sedan, a label it carries to this day.

What's the best era of Impala? (We all know it's the third, right?)

I'm very aware that this is the same car driven by two teen heartthrobs on the idiot box. But I don't even care.

I had one identical to the car in the picture at top, minus the blonde. A 1963 super sport, floor shifter, 327/300hp...wish I still had her. Back seat big enough to haul around a baseball team. Repainted the exterior white. Always drew a crowd when I drove it. It was my semi-daily driver from 1986 until the mid-90's. When I bought the car, it had 87,000 on it. I drove it for a few years, then rebuilt the motor, and put another 100,000 on the car. The trunk was so big, I hauled the hood from my brother's 1976 Monte Carlo to the body shop in it, with the trunk lid closed.

My very first car, in 1969, was a 1963 Chevrolet Impala coupe, but not the SS. I learned a LOT about automobiles while keeping that car on the road, and I wouldn't trade those few years for anything. It was a great car, especially for the era; I put gas in it, and it went. I wish I still had it.

I had a 1967 Impala two door fastback. It wasn't really a hotrod, but a nice cruiser. It was still pretty quick though. We used it like a truck. We would load half a ton of presto-logs in the back seat. The other interesting thing is it would get 9 miles to the gallon on regular and twelve with premium. That more than offset the cost of the higher grade.

My neighbor had a 1965 four-door hardtop (?!) With just a 283 four barrel it would pass other cars while climbing Snoqualmie Pass with six passengers and their luggage.

Seems the general consensus is the '60's or early 70's. Same with Chrysler and Ford, for the life of me I can't figure out what happened? Maybe it has something to do with removing asbestos from buildings or lead from plumbing.
