Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The Modern Ferrari-Powered Concept That (Re)Defined Minimalism

Posted April 26, 2018 9:00 AM by dstrohl

The Italian word barchetta translates to “little boat,” a description often applied to small, lightweight, open-air sports cars like the 1948 Ferrari 166MM. In 1993, Germany’s Michalak Design paid homage to the early Ferrari barchettas with a sleek two-seat roadster concept called the Conciso, which it hoped to put into small-scale production. Just one example was built, however, and on May 12 the Michalak Conciso crosses the block in Monte Carlo, part of RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale.

The Conciso wasn’t Bernd Michalak’s first attempt at building a modern interpretation of the barchetta theme. In 1989, the designer crafted a 1:1 model of a strikingly similar car called the Cilindro, unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show and shown again at the Geneva Auto Salon in 1990. Even earlier Michalak designs, such as the limited-production Corsaspider, a compact two-seater with a folding hardtop, and the Topino, a roof-less Opel Corsa with a matching trailer, showed his passion for open-air motoring and nimble vehicles.

Even for a Ferrari, the Conciso was ahead of its time.

Face it..

The car has a frog face and people don't like to drive cars with frog faces.

...apparently any other kind of face is just fine.

Yeah. Those cars with four eyes in Pixar movies, always creep me out and confuse me. What's up with that?
You just never know which pair of eyes to look at.

That's like one ugly-ass toy platypus.

I have one question: WHY?

As Elon Musk said:

It costs the same to make panels for an ugly car body, as for a good-looking one. The metal press doesn't care.

I can see how at the time this was a future-looking design. Unfortunately, I don't think it's held up well over time. I'm sure I'd love driving it though.

Future looking? Yes

Fun? Sure

Ready for the world? Not really

That looks like more of a mobile bar stool than a unicycle. Ha!
