Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Corvette Summer

Among the Corvette crowd, there always seems to be some push and pull when it comes to the topic of the 3rd-gen cars. Are they collectible right now? Of course! Look no further than our own Hemmings marketplace, both in print and online, and you’ll see plenty of evidence of that. Are they as cool as their older brothers or younger cousins? Well, that depends on how old you are, it seems. Like, what generation of ‘Vette was brand new when you were a teenager? That’s probably the one you dig the most. Or, which Corvette pre-dated you by at least one generation (read: what Corvette might your cool uncle have driven when you were in grade school?).

It is likely opinions of the Corvette are formed by the memories, and less so the vehicle.

We owned a '72 coupe for 30 years. It was a blast to drive and the best looking body of any Vettes until the current generation.

My daughter and son-in-law have it now.

(Very) Old School here: I prefer the original 'split-window' design Corvettes.

Most of the Corvettes I've seen on the roads could just as well be powered by an Iron Duke. I think those drivers are just going for the look. In the country areas around Maryland and Virginia, it is very rare to see a Corvette being thrashed around a set of twisties.

I'm sure there are those who take their Corvettes to track days and all, but those drivers seem to be far in the minority.

For many, it is the Corvette badge of honor. Whether it corners well, accelerates hard, or stops hard enough to splatter your eyeballs on the windscreen doesn't really matter.

Been around them all my life. My oldest brother had one back in the late sixties, early seventies. He now has a later model. A very good friend has one. They are very capable vehicles no doubt. I prefer two wheels however.

I rode motorcycles, Suzuki's, Kawasaki's, and a Triumph till I got into my 40's.

Never wanted a hog, cause they are a statement, not transportation, as you suggested of the Vette.

I'll take the Vette any day, if for no other reason than safety. I think they are more fun of a twisty mountain road than a bike. Just my opinion.

I wasn't suggesting that Corvettes were designed to be transportation at all, it just seems that's how they get used (and as such could be powered by an Iron Duke. )

I recall you have a racing background and I dare say you probably wouldn't hesitate to thrash one down a back road.

I've been riding (on the street) since '78. Mostly Honda's, but my latest ride is a Buell Ulysses. Also have a flock of CRF's when the family goes trail riding.

That's a nice bike! It looks fast!

I forgot to mention my '78 Husqvarna 450 desert bike. By today's standards, it's a dog.
