Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Affordable Performance – the 2001-’04 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Speed costs money,” the old saying goes, “so how fast do you want to spend?” There are exceptions to this rule, and one notable example is the C5 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, produced for the 2001-’04 model years. Given their performance potential, prices are (relatively) low today, but don’t expect that to be the case much longer.

As the Corvette faithful know, the Z06 name first appeared in 1963, attached to a package designed to turn the then-new Sting Ray coupe into an SCCA contender. Initially available only on split-window coupes, the Z06 package required the fuel-injected, 327-cu.in. L84 V-8, rated at 360 horsepower, with the M20 four-speed transmission. Checking the box next to the RPO Z06 option gave the buyer a 20-percent larger front anti-roll bar; vacuum brake booster; dual-circuit master cylinder; sintered metal brake shoes; 11.2-inch finned aluminum brake drums with front brake cooling ducts and vented backing plates; firmer dampers and stiffer springs; and a Positraction rear with 3.70:1 gearing.

Too young to be a true classic, but definitely an OG.

Aluminum brake drums? That sounds somewhat unconventional.

Haha yeah....

..."The center and braking surface is cast iron, and the outer ring is cast aluminum. "...

But, are those really drum brakes with shoes ? Seems odd in a 'modern' vehicle. My Suburban's parking brakes are small drum brakes (top hat style) inside the rear rotors.

But I do understand that drum brakes have potentially much better stopping power than disks because of the increased friction surface area. Most semi-trailer brakes are still drums. And, I guess the finned aluminum gets rid of the heat better than typical vented rotors to mitigate the heat issue that plagued old-school drum brakes under hard use.

Well that's a 1963 corvette the're talking about, not the '01-04...

..."1965 was both the first year for all wheel disc brakes and the last year for the fuel injected engine. The two magic performance features would not appear together until 17 years later in the 1982 Corvette."...

How did they accomplish this without fear of corrosion from the dissimilar metals?

The cast iron surface appears to be pressed in, and if left in a damp environment they would corrode...
