Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

FIVA Declares It Won’t Support Electrified Classic Vehicles

FIVA, the global organization dedicated to preserving older vehicles in part by fighting legislation aimed at getting old cars off the road, has declared it will not advocate for electrified classic vehicles and that such vehicles are not considered historic.

“FIVA (the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or international federation of historic vehicles) understands the motivation of some owners to electrify their vehicles – and acknowledges that, subject to legislation and regulation, all modifications are a matter of personal choice,” the organization wrote in a statement this week. “However, FIVA – as an organisation dedicated to the preservation, protection and promotion of historic vehicles – cannot promote, to owners or regulators, the use of modern EV components (motors and batteries) to replace a historic vehicle’s powertrain.”

History may cite this as a lost opportunity - time will tell.

Why is this even an issue. Should be a no brainer.

When I considered putting a modern drive train in my 67 GT350 I discovered it would lose most of its value, even if I kept the original drivetrain in a crate and did not permanently modify the car to accommodate the newer engine and transmission I would still lose the value of it being 'original'. I loved driving it, but that hyper 289, Borg Warner t10 tranny and Detroit locking rear is one hell of a rough drivetrain. The suspension was likewise unforgiving. Not an ideal roadtrip car by any stretch of the imagination. Basically this was one of the unused race versions built at the beginning of the 67 run that were not used. no insulation, no arm rests, no back seat, radio delete. power steering and power brakes and Kelsey Hayes two piece rims were the total option list.

As this is part of my retirement strategy, The car is unmolested and still hiding in a garage in Florida. I haven't driven it in 15 years. Start the engine move it a bit exercise the brakes. that's all it gets now.

If the road trip is for a burger and fries or a nice pizza and beer I'm sure it's more than adequate. Crazy thing to sock away.

Would FIVA support your vehicle if you modified it to look like a giant sheepdog?
