Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Open Diff – What Other Dead Brands Will Be Resurrected as Electric Vehicles?

Who shall conceive the horrors of my secret toil as I dabbled among the unhallowed damps of the grave or tortured the living animal to animate the lifeless clay?” – Mary Shelley, from “Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus

I’m hearing reports that a new electric Hummer will soon appear in my supper bowl, which makes sense because I’m already used to receiving messages from the outside world encoded in my alphabet soup. It’s an interesting phenomenon in which…

Oh, wait, Super Bowl. They said Super Bowl. My bad.

Still, there’s supposedly a new Hummer on its way, nearly a decade after GM gave the brand the ax. My alphabet soup sources say it won’t be a standalone brand, rather an electric truck of some sort under the GMC brand. Make of that what you will.

Who wants an EV Hudson? Or De Soto? Or Datsun? Or Plymouth? Or...

Wouldn't that be all 6VDC positive-ground British vehicles?

Volkswagon has the already built in super cool retro car line whether they know it or not.

The Firefly is the standard version and the lightning 'bug' is the performance version. and their electric microbus is adorable.

I believe that Saab is likely to be reborn as an electric vehicle. At least I've read that the Chinese owners of the factory have kept a crew of folks around for that possibility.

AS the world wakes up to the reality that building electric cars is NOT just slapping a battery and electric motor into an existing ICE vehicle American companies continue their denial of reality. Don't build a new, compelling , better car, just slap video screens in them, Big ones! and make it so we can change the way the radio works "over the air" and that will make it all better.
Never mind that VW, Mercedes, Audi and BMW have all learned, the hard way, that building a vehicle to compete with Tesla is a daunting task. All mentioned above have had to eat crow, including buying Teslas to meet the contracts they signed with companies expecting electric cars for delivery this year. Infinity is selling Teslas in Canada, special order, because buyers want an electric alternative and guess what?

AINT NOBODY GOT ONE.

So I wouldn't get too excited as our dinosaurs continue to sell gas powered SUVs. Both Ford and GM are trying the same halfassed shit. They are trying to rebrand and repower an existing SUV already in the design pipeline as an ICE vehicle, slap the cool name on it, camaro, mustang, hummer? gees that is desperate, and collect the carbon credits so we can keep building gas SUVs.

Not everyone is so myopic.

The current problem(pardon the pun) with electric vehicles is the lifetime of the batteries and is mainly due to unequal charging of the series batteries.

They are expensive and difficult to replace and usually only require a parallel balancing charge to restore function, but the dealers will insist on a new replacement.$$$$

It would require more hardware, and software, but they could be charged in parallel and discharged in series using SSR's or Mosfets. IMHO, it would be worth a small premium to extend life of the batteries.

Another problem is range, which is affected by the vehicle weight.

A heavy HUMMER is likely to have a very limited range, especially if it is used off road, like it's original design was intended.

I would like to see a small auxiliary motor for use in stop-and-go traffic, where the whole interstate is moving at 5 mph in spurts.Even a golf cart motor would suffice for this. They are about only 1 hp.

gm has just this week announced they will convert hamtramck assy. for dedicated e-vehicle production and will intro several nameplates in the coming couple of years...an early announcement is supposed to be a pickup...I guess that would figure- it's gone from being a commercial line to upmarket profit-center

Very true, and 2.2 bil is not small change, but it is also nowhere near what other companies have discovered is the cost of building an electric vehicle factory.

That amount is more inline with a design and development center and maybe a prototype production shop.

Granted they already have the land and building. It is possible to retool a factory, but so far no one who has tried has had success. (VW is a year behind in their Chinese factory conversion and falling steadily farther behind as they discover the old machines are not capable of new processes, and the old processes not adequate to build a "new" car.)

Change is good.
