Five Ways to Make Your Employees Feel Valued

Posted February 21, 2021 12:00 AM by ahorner_22

It’s no secret that 2020 was a tough year. People experienced challenges they’ve never experienced before. For anyone running an essential business during the height of the pandemic, things were challenging on a different level. Trying to keep workers safe and keep machinery running to meet increased demand involved a new set of rules. Amidst all the chaos were the backbones of organizations: employees. Making employees feel valued has become more important than ever before. This article explores ways to make employees feel valued.

Employee value tip 1: Say thank you

Saying thank you sounds simplistic but how often are those two words forgotten? Being genuine and specific while saying thank you goes a long way.

Employee value tip 2: Free lunches

Buying employees lunch can be a simple way to show them they are valued. If it fits your budget, buying lunch is a simple way to provide a nice reward.

Employee value tip 3: Solicit employee opinions and really listen

Asking employees what they think and really listening when they answer is important for making employees feel valued. Sometimes it is uncomfortable to receive feedback. Managers can get over their discomfort with the simple reminder that employees put a lot of time into achieving goals for the company.

Employee value tip 4: Communicate well and often

Transparent communication is an important step towards making employees feel valued. Authentic communication makes employees feel they are important enough to be included in company communications. Good communication also cuts back on gossip and makes employees feel trusted.

For employees to feel valued, it starts with supervisors having the desire to explore new ways to appreciate their employees. This can help create a positive culture for all employees within the organization. It’s a winning plan.

5. Pay them what they're worth....double time for over hours...triple time for special duty...bonuses for hazardous duty....

Unless you work for Kroger, where requesting, " Hazardous Duty " pay can get you fired and your place of employment to be liquidated.

This is so typical of HR management advice to engineers. HR offers rudimentary advice as pearls of great wisdom yet they cannot do simple math, like counting.

It makes me wonder about the quality of HR's values for the company and the individual employees.

Does HR ever consider the idea that they've made a bad, inconsiderate gesture? Case in point, the "free lunch" idea proffered here.

My former employer was at a large, international research facility. The managers repeatedly applied this free lunch concept badly. Regularly during Ramadan they would have an "all hands" lunch. I have a severe allergy to all seafood and nuts. What would they serve for the summer barbecue, grilled fish. Fish grilled adjacent to the burgers being served. One might think that an employee barfing during the picnic might reveal the problem but it didn't. My immediate supervisor would hold group meetings with bowls of nuts for snacks. One of these I was compelled to attend to obtain a service award.
