Yes, Saabs are the rally darlings of the Swedish car crowd. Erik Carlsson made "Saab" and "rally" synonymous, and the cars even took on the Baja 1000. But let's not sleep on the rally potential of vintage Volvos, especially the bricks of the Eighties.
Advantages: Easily modified to produce more power than a family sedan should; rear-wheel drive for those big rooster tails of dirt and for sliding the rear end out at will; and that legendary indestructibility. Just watch these videos to see what sort of a licking they can repeatedly take on tight, challenging stages and how they can shrug off a little bit of unauthorized forestry like they meant to play tree trunk pinball. One even takes out a telephone pole and just saunters away. Sure, that approach doesn't exactly breed finesse, but as they say, to finish first, one must first finish.

Wife cried when I finally made her give up her 740 daily driver; they're certainly tough, very safe cars. But seeing that 1800 in the freeze-frame start of that video made me just a little sick. Why would anyone do that to such a beautiful, relatively rare vehicle?
