While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.
Dodge, purveyor of Demons, Hellcats and 392s, the last bastion of old-school American muscle, is going electric. This does not, however, mean the end of ridiculous-horsepower Mopars. Quite the opposite, according to Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis. Electrification means more horsepower and even higher performance, and to prove it, Dodge will launch a fully electric muscle car in 2024.
According to Kuniskis, the shift is more about evolution, and a recognition of what electric motors mean for performance. "Our engineers are reaching a practical limit of what we can squeeze from internal combustion innovation," he says.
Just don't call it an electric vehicle. "Dodge will not sell electric cars. Dodge will sell electric muscle. So if a charger can make a Charger quicker, we're in."

There is no such thing as an electric muscle car...you're stealing terminology from a dedicated car culture...it's insulting and disrespectful...street cars don't need to be any faster than 0-60 in a few seconds...

I'm no muscle car fan, so I may well be speaking out of turn...
I've had the impression that those who like muscle cars like the noise. I hate noise! There is no question that electric motors can provide much better acceleration from zero than most ICE power trains, but I have no idea whether that acceleration is what thrills muscle car folks.
Since Electric cars are practically silent, I've wanted one for around 60 years, but I suspect that only a small fraction of muscle car buyers will want one.

It doesn't have to be loud to be satisfying. Loud is only acceptable at the track. But like SE mentioned, silent vehicles have no 'soul'. The whir of a 'sewing machine' is too antiseptic.
For acceleration junkies, you can get a fix much cheaper at any of the better amusement parks around the country.

We have trash tucks here that are electric. They are noisy, even more so that the ICE equivalent IMHO. I'm glad to hear that electric cars are relatively quiet. I'm quite sure that acceleration is what thrills muscle car folks.

I suspect that the noise from those trucks isn't from the electric motors, but rather from hydraulic systems that lift and dump the waste containers and later compact the garbage into the truck's bin.

I was a serious US Mopar fan as a kid in the 60s to early 70s, all the way over in Australia. Dad had a 64 Valiant wagon, which was a quick car here in those days :). My 1970 high school Technical Drawing project was a drawing of a 69 Charger - still my all time favourite muscle car. (BTW, we had the Valiant Charger here with a 302bhp, 265ci 6cyl and triple Webbers in the early 70s) While I will probably own a quick electric vehicle some day, I can't see the public getting as enthused as I was half a century ago, no matter how fast the things go. No sound, vibration or pulsation etc. = no charisma in my book, just transport. I think I now know how Dad felt about the end of steam locomotives.

Well considering trains have been electric motor driven since the demise of the steam engine, electric motors should give some outstanding performance in this platform. I will be tempted by this as a play car(parked in the garage all week) and driving on weekends. With that said it will probably be out of my price range. Look forward to seeing the public version being released.
