Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Open Diff: Do You Have A "Forever" Car?

I recently treated myself to a present in the form of the digital illustration shown here, beautifully crafted by the talented architect, graphic artist, and unrepentant Volvo 240 fanatic Douglas Peterson-Hui of The Architect's Garage. I've been following Douglas's auto-art page on Instagram for a while and love how he pares vehicles down to their essence, and places them in similarly essential, complimentary settings.

I thought it would be great fun to commemorate my Volvo C70 and C30 in a piece of frame-worthy art. I consider them, like the other cars currently in my stable, to be part of my "permanent" collection.

Going through the process of commissioning this piece got me thinking about the idea of having "keepers," cars I have no plan to sell. When I bought the C70, it was the realization of a dream, something I'd long thought out of reach. The C30 was an oddly matter-of-fact, practical purchase: I'd never bought a new car, and this was literally my last chance to grab a fresh-off-the-boat, manual-transmission Swede. So in my mind, they're irreplaceable.

And then there's the Model A, which has been part of the family for 53 years, and the MGB, which has been around for 32...

In a many ways, I'm envious of enthusiasts who aren't tied down to a handful of vehicles, who are able to cycle through cars as their interest or situation dictates. They get to enjoy a wide variety of motoring experiences! My peculiar (overly sentimental?) method of approaching this hobby is obviously limiting, leaving me needing more garage space and funds to broaden my automotive horizons.

How do you feel about owning collectible vehicles: Do you like to experience one thing for a time, then change it for something else? Or do you have any "forever" cars? If so, what is it about them that makes them so special to you?

I don't have the time or energy to collect cars, but if I did, I think my forever car would be the original "hot hatch" just for fun.

The C30 has an extremely ugly backside... The ugliest back is Renault Megane 2, and Volvo C30 is on the second place.

I'm in the process of restoring a 1993 F150 for my forever vehicle.

It's got the woodchipper 300 cu in inline 6 with an M5OD-R2 manual transmission.

This engine went in all kinds of equipment, so parts should be available for quite a while. I recently purchased a spare engine that will be headed to the machine shop for a freshening up. With two engines, this truck should go 160mph!

The toughest vehicle I ever owned was a 1959 Ford F150,six cylinder,3 on the column. It was bought as a knock-around hunting truck for $100 dollars.I did not care if it got a scratch or dent, and people deliberately made a space around it in the parking lot.Imagine an old rusty truck, with a gun rack behind the seat,a 1/4 wave CB antennae with a raccoon tail on the end, deer antlers as a hood ornament. It had bumpers like a wrecker, and a hood like a barge.I could run over 3 inch trees without a dent, and make a trail through the woods.I actually tried to tear it up,but it just kept on going, like the bunny.I wish I had taken the time to restore it,but it was too much rust, and eventually I sold it for $300 dollars to another hunter. The only vehicle I ever made money on.I still see it now and then, ugly as ever.I guess it will just never die.

It was really built Ford Tough.
