Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The Holley MoParty has a wide variety of activities for all Mopar enthusiasts to enjoy, and it’s highly practical that the historic Beech Bend Raceway Park facility has a paved oval track on site. This offers the ability to set up autocross courses and all sorts of other great driving activities within the confines of a safe, contained space. The Holley MoParty took advantage of the oval track all weekend long, focusing on autocross racing, the Dodge Thrill Rides, and the Hemmings 3S Challenge.

The autocross course featured a challenging series of twists and turns, as well as some areas of hard acceleration. It posed different challenges to different styles of cars. For instance, a number of classic Dodge trucks took part in the event, and trucks often have a built-in disadvantage: weight balance. The vintage cars that really seem to work best on the autocross course are the Mopar E-Body cars (Dodge Challenger and Plymouth ‘Cuda), as the weight balance keeps all four tires planted nicely. We spotted all sorts of applications on the Holley MoParty autocross and 3S Challenge course. From blazingly quick Dodge Vipers to nimble front-wheel-drive economy cars, the field was packed with a nice variety of builds.

The Hemmings 3S Challenge took place on Sunday and offered a cool twist on this handling competitions. The 3 S’s stand for Speed, Stop and Steer. The competition involves two vehicles lining up side-by-side, and then barreling off into a near 180-degree corner. Then, it’s a quick chicane and the racers must stop inside a “box” of cones. It’s a great spectator sport, as it is quick and exciting, and it’s fun for the drivers, too. See some of the highlights from the autocross and Hemmings 3S Challenge at the 2022 Holley MoParty event.
