Gentlemen, Inflate Your Engines

Posted October 17, 2007 8:12 AM by Sharkles

Hybrid cars are so last year. Next on tap for auto ingenuity: Inflatable cars. The "Whisper T" electric car (link no longer available; original article could be previously found at eurekamagazine.co.uk) still in the funding phase, offers a sealed-composite two-seater with optimum safety from the already-inflated air bags and built-in flotation capability. But the biggest selling point of the vehicle is its sub-$5,000 price tag.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plastics Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plastics Fabrication today.

For some reason I keep imaging playing bumper cars on the road of the future.

Gee, lets see, buy any 10,000 batteries and their system automatically is safe. With my AA cell charger holding 4 cells for chaarge, I only need 2,500 chargers to load my own cheapest cells into. Pantented, but don't ask for any patent info. What's the weight of 10,000 AA L-Ion batteries? 500 AH, for 300 mile range, would be a 5 hour drive @ 60 mph, that would be a constant load of 100 A, at whatever voltage. Paralleled 1.4 v, thet're tied together with at least 2/0 wires.

Axles( or independent suspension), engine, transmission, passengers, battery pack support, wiring support, all suspended by air chambers. "Hey Charlie, your roof and door are going flat"

Built in air bags (oops, trampolines) to protect you. Dumb car manufacturers use explosive air bags which deflate upon impact (you) so that you don't boumce from them. That's no fun.

Stop by tour local NAPA like store and just swap out 10,000 cells, all as good as your own, recharged free of any energy or labor cost.

Headlight alignment would be fun. A really safe system. If I add up the safety interlocks on their page, it must have 15 interlocked safety systems. Fun to troubleshoot. Four wheels and eight motors.

Watch out Fred, that guy in front of you just threw a lit cigarette but out the window.

Great summer and winter insulation without all of that conductive metal gone. I know, it's assembled with rubber cement. What holds the windows and door frames up, water bags?

Don't worry about breaks, there is a hole in the floor for your foot and tennis shoe.

Damned, I'm getting low in my trust now. Send me $ 5,000.00 and if I can build a prototype of a vehicle for that, I'll send you one. Don't hold your breath.

Either a Russian Bussiness Network site, or a College grant proposal.

Forgot to add that the keel plate for flotation is an extra cost. Don't float home without one. Does it come with propellers, too?

I went to their web site. ZERO information!!

But I want to see one built so I can sneeze at it and watch it blow over.

This is a really scary idea for a car.

Would it be in poor taste to say;

"It sounds like a lot of hot air" ??
