Green Costing Green

Posted November 16, 2011 6:53 AM

A company which tried to make the vilified plastic water bottle more eco-friendly is now the subject of a California lawsuit. Microbial agents included in plastic resins will speed plastic bottle biodegradation, claims the manufacturer. The lawsuit alleges false advertising. Will this action discourage them and others to green up the water bottle?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plastics Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plastics Fabrication today.

Most things claiming to be "green" contain lies or disinformation. The entire state of California is guilty of this.

In the case of plastic, I think they're all using the wrong tact by trying to find ways to make it decompose. They should be looking for ways to readily make it into fuel, with the composition of containers made to support that goal.....................maybe by adding a particular solvent or something that would make it ready to be used, with little effort.

Hardly. (BTW the US idiom is "discourage from" rather than "discourage to".)

There are many ways to "green up" water bottles, the most obvious being to buy one bottle and use it many times (for years). Bottles with built in filters are available, and they work quite well to deal with taste issues. There is no scientifically demonstrated benefit to any of the bottled waters -- you might just as well drink tap water (from a bicycling water bottle, if you want) and save loads of money. (Many brands are just municipal tap water. )

I think the problem with the ENSO bottle is that is does not work as claimed. On the ENSO site, they say in two adjacent sections:

  • "The latest test results under the ASTM D 5511 conditions show that ENSO bottles will biodegrade in 250 days."
  • "The latest test results under the ASTM D 5511 conditions show that ENSO bottles will biodegrade in 1 to 10 years."

On their Facebook page, they say 5-15 years. It seems that they don't have a clue, and have not really demonstrated that the bottles biodegrade... thus the false advertising suit.

Microbial agents? At a loading of .37%, (per the bottle site) I doubt that there is a pro-microbial agent that will make bacteria want to eat (or be capable of eating) these bottles.

The Aquamantra water site is a trip. The bottles have mantras (such as "I am healthy") printed on them. The mantra changes the molecular structure of the water -- in other words the water "knows" what the label says, and changes accordingly. Of course, there is no scientific evidence of this whatsoever. This idea comes from Masuru Emoto, who sells products based on his "theories." Masuru claims that the water "knows" what to do even if the language is changed. Sure. One could wonder how the water "knows" to read just the mantra and not all the other info on the label.

I hope Masuru's technology is kept out of the hands of terrorists. Imagine if the label, in tiny undecipherable letters, said "I am dead." A terrorist could sneak into the label printers for Dasani, and wipe out a large part of a population.

Magic water in magic bottles. Why not?

If one were convinced of the need to purchase water in a bottle, then distilled water in a gallon container would be a good bet: $.99 per gallon instead of $8 or so.

What a concept!!!

I think I've purchased 2 bottled waters in my life, when nothing else was available.

Hey, at least they even things out with plenty from the left side of the page.

I try not to go too far one way or the other.................there's really only stupid and smart when it comes down to it.

Something like this is what I was referring to. Plastics could be formulated to make the process even easier, and the final product cleaner burning, I would think.

Why work on ways to get plastic to disappear into the soil, when we can use it to generate power?
