3D Wars

Posted October 20, 2011 7:33 AM

Starting next summer, Sony will no longer assume the cost for 3D glasses now handed out at U.S. movie theaters, contending that consumers should purchase and reuse them. Theater operators fear customers will just stay home rather than shoulder the extra cost. After theaters have invested heavily in 3D technology, is it fair to change who pays for the specs?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plastics Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plastics Fabrication today.

What? Are you telling me U.S. theatre owners held a belief these glasses would be provided at no charge forever?

Wow. Where do the theatre owners purchase their own rose colored glasses?

Consumers should purchase them and reuse them? This sounds reasonable to me. I see a niche market opportunity opening up for LynDoor™. LynDoor™ Industries, your 3D entertainment leader for eight months.

Every time I went to a 3D movie I kept my glasses! Who's laughing now?

Your glasses will be safe but the candy dish might be a different issue.

Some theaters ask for the glasses back. If they were new I always kept them because they tack on an extra $4 to the movie ticket. I always figured that I paid for the glasses. Now it seems that Sony already paid for them.

I guess the theater owners that "recycled" glasses got paid by the movie goer and Sony.

Australian theatres changes for them from day #1 and recommended that you keep them for your next visit. No big deal.

Not that I go to movie theaters that much anyway. But I don't go to 3D movies. Since I have only one decent eye they don't work for me anyway.

This is Sony just trying to squeeze some more profit out of their movies. Average cost of a movie in the US for 2010 was $ 7.89

http://www.natoonline.org/statisticstickets.htm

These paper glasses can be bought on line in bulk for 30 cents ea. That's from a distributor not a manufacturer.

I suspect the real problem is Sony being gouged by the theaters for the glasses. I doubt that they are distributing them to the theaters. Some theaters providing more then the paper glasses. And hitting them up with other costs in distributing them.

Poor business decision to even go public with this. Should just tacked the cost onto the price of the ticket. Most these 3D movie cost more to see anyway.

Paper glasses... around me they provide black plastic framed glasses and charge an extra $7 per 3D movie ticket. If I bring my own glasses do I save the 7 bucks? Bet not!

Is the movie more costly for us to see because of these glasses, or is it because of the more expensive hardware and processes required to produce and display a 3D film?

Re: 3D Wars

Without question, there are additional expenses in the film making process and the necessary equipment but based on how packed the theaters are, the fact that the equipment has been purchased and other parts of the country are only adding $4 to the ticket price my guess is that the actual additional expenses incurred are somewhere around $2 per movie goer and the balance is profit. I'm fine with paying more for the experience but just not the same as when I did not have to provide (or buy) the glasses. BTW- I have 2 kids that never miss a 3D movie so I have definitely done my part to support this industry.

I'm glad that you are picking up my slack. I have never seen one of these current 3D features. I'm not much of a go-to-the-movies person; I haven't gone to the movies at all in 3 years or so.

I have seen a few of the anaglyph technology films. I can only assume the newer technologies and techniques provide vastly superior experiences for viewers. For seven extra bucks per kid, I would hope so!

I have said this on CR4 before: When the porno industry embraces 3D technology for home viewing, and it really looks real, sales of players, glasses, etc. will go through the roof!

Remembering that I am going to G and PG rated 3D movies, the special effects are very hit and miss. Some of the movie makers are doing amazing stuff... we'll just leave it at that!

You know, all of this thinking about the movies has begun a craving for some fresh popped corn and some of those chocolate covered peanuts!

I might have to catch a film this weekend. I might even see a 3D, just to see what's up.

See everybody next week. Doorman.

So their gouging you and Sony. Those glasses cost them at the most $3.00. If Sony agreement was they would foot the bill for the glasses. You can be sure the theater owner is billing them something for them.

Re: 3D Wars

Or maybe it's the other way around... I'm sure that Sony covered the cost of the glasses (that they would be "providing") into the theaters owners' purchase/lease price of each movie. Either way we know who really pays for those glasses in the end... and it sounds like now we get to pay twice... want some extra yellow dyed, salted vegetable oil at 50 cents a squirt to go with that? (my 3D glasses)

BTW- I will still be taking the kids to 3Ds anyway but I'll be bringing my own glasses!

No thanks they don't make clear clip-ons that I've seen. With out my glasses the 3D effects moot point. Don't go to theaters for movies. All I have to do is wait couple months if that long. Rent it on Blu-ray.

The book is aways much better. Once read most movies are a disappointment.

I agree with you 100% but if I want some peace and quiet in order to get to read I need to take the kids.

My teenager has a solution for the book vs. movie issue... don't read (or at least only after you go) and you won't be disappointed by the movie! Isn't wonderful how teenagers can solve all your problems with their infinite wisdom... but I digress.

Solution? Sounds like an excuse not to read.

Why should I let some screen writer interpret the artist work for me? They usually do a poor job. Leave half the content out. Blurring the story line. Just for entertainment on screen.

The new "3 Musketeers" attests to that!

And looking at the trailers for Princess of Mars titled "John Carter of Mars", while visually appealing, I can see too many diversions from the original material that they made to appeal to the current generation of movie goers.

...all the more reason to NOT want to see any 3D shows...especially since good old-fashioned 2D has "worked" so well, for so long...
