The crew of the STS-120 Discovery has made it safely to orbit! The space shuttle was launched today at approximately 11:45 AM EST. The shuttle crew consists of 7 astronauts including Dan Tani, who will be remaining at the International Space Station (ISS). The return crew will also include Clayton Anderson, who has been living on the ISS.

The mission is expected to last 14 days, making the Discovery the twenty-third shuttle to dock at the International Space Station. As part of its mission, the crew is delivering "Harmony", an Italian-built segment. In addition, the NASA astronauts will move a tower of solar arrays to a new position. Discovery is scheduled to land on November 6, 2007 at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

These astronauts really do have some courage. I watched a luanch from the beach at daytona and it frightened me.

Believe me I'm not easily frightened but the ground was vibrating under my feet and the whole concept of space tavel came home to me.

What small fry we really are
