Optical Fiber Takes to the Air

Posted October 12, 2006 6:00 AM

You've heard of fly by light, but now an optical switch could lead to photonic control of elevators, rudders, and other flight hardware, displacing heavy, fire-prone electrical harnesses. Texas A&M University researchers developed the prototype switch, which consists of a cantilever bonded to a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Applying pressure to the switch changes the size of the Fabry-Perot cavity, altering the resultant interference pattern to generate an optical signal.

This could be applied to auto uses as well. It would lighten the car and make it safer since it would reduce the electrical uses. This kind of advancement can and should be applied far and wide yet it seems that it will be as many others, staying in the market it was aimed for.
