Solid waste managers may want to consider the climatic implications of their operations and assess opportunities to curb greenhouse gas emissions. While solid waste management systems are sources of such emissions, they can also provide offsets and sinks through fuel substitution and recycling. A carbon-neutral management plan reduces emissions through landfill gas recovery, waste-to-energy, recycling, and waste reduction initiatives. Early adoption of such proactive measures is expected to dovetail with pending state regulatory programs, including legislation recently implemented in California.
