Injectable, functionalized nanoparticles produced by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can be remotely triggered to release anticancer drugs. The drugs are tied to the particles using DNA strands. An applied low-frequency electromagnetic field generates sufficient heat to dissolve the DNA bonds. Because the melting point of the DNA strands can be varied, particles could be functionalized with multiple drugs or designed for cascaded release of a single drug.
