October 25, 1960: The Electronic Wristwatch

Posted October 25, 2006 11:03 AM by Chris Leonard

On October 25, 1960, the Bulova Watch Company began selling the Accutron wristwatch. The Accutron was powered by a simple oscillator formed between electronic circuitry and a magnetic tuning fork. This oscillation turned the mechanical gears in the watch. The slogan Bulova used to pitch the Accutron "The watch that hums," referred to the sound made by the oscillation.

While tuning fork technology wasn't new, it had been used in standing clocks for a long time, Bulova was the first company to use it to power a wristwatch. Most watches of the time were mechanical, requiring manual winding or were wound by the rotary motion of the wearer's arm.

The Accutron watch model was discontinued in 1977.

For more information on the technical workings of the Accutron, check this link.

Cool Story & I actually own one. These watches are very collectable and still command a good price for a used watch. Who would have thought…

And, like fountain pens, Accutron watches are no longer inexpensive. Or even reasonably expensive.

Is the term "Japanese movement" for quartz watches correct, or is that a misnomer?

My wife bought me one of these as a wedding present in 1976, it cost her as much as a 243 Winchester, which I would still own. It spent almost all of the next 18 months going back and forth to the warranty agent and other jewellers when the warranty ran out. It was replaced with a Seiko in 1978. It's best feature was the Synthetic Saphire lens which didn't scratch.
