RFID: Moving the Point-of-Sale

Posted January 08, 2008 8:02 AM

A radio frequency identification (RFID) system will help a new clothing store track products in the store and enable customers to buy without standing in line. Sales staff will use RFID readers that act as point-of-sale devices. This article also describes how the RFID system will help the store, when it opens in the Spring, to minimize out-of-stock occurrences.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Material Handling, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Material Handling today.

Hope this system works better than the one we have at the store & work at part time.

Half the time the PDAs wont communicate with the server 1/4 of the time they say we have a certain # of item in stock but don't & 1/4 time they actually work correctly.

Funny this article should come up. I just had a LONG DISCUSSION with my wife about why stock in a store isn't automatically updated & ordered as needed. You would think that with all the computer cash registers and computer inventory systems used today. That there would be no need for an item to be out of stock. It should be ordered automatically when the registers say "we've sold 4 of the 6 of these items better reorder".

She has been in the retail business for 15 years and told me but thats not how retail works. You have to have a person that looks at the inventory for each store then communicate with the buyers for the chain then they decide if they need to order more or not. I can understand this process when it comes to a seasonal item but for everyday stuff like cereal or toilet paper. They should even need to be involved.
