Can You Design a Car for This Girl?

Posted January 19, 2008 8:00 AM

Picture today's eight-year-olds in 20 years. Now picture what they'll be driving. Now, go ahead and design that car digitally and submit it to what Car Design News calls "the largest all-digital car design content in the world." Open to individual professional and student designers, the contest gives a brief of three "Millenniumites" (people born in 2000) and asks contest entrants to design a set of wheels for them. Deadline for initial "snapshot" entries is March 26.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Plastics Fabrication, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Plastics Fabrication today.

Rest assured it won't be a 2ton 4x4.

It will probably be designed and built in India or China, certainly not UK, and probably won't run on petrol.

Of course that is the way they thought things would go in the 1970's also. Big heavy monstrocity cars have a way of coming back into style amongst females, and trendy males. When they are symbolic of power, decadence and money, without being so decadent as to generate a large clamour of public backlash, movie stars and pop singers will purchase them, followed shortly thereafter by the soccer moms and young wat-to-bes who want to show off the wealth and position in society. In some cases this is represented by a sports car, but these are frowned on by society for soccer moms, less safe, and inconvenient. Other times it is the tank like vehicles that burn fuel like there is a bottomless tank inside.

I suspect the future car marketed for females would contain more capabilities to allow greater access to their social network communications, while affording greater capacity for multi tasking their appearance and driving. This will likely put more stress on men who would then be required to talk to 10 people and watch the news, all while driving and getting dressed. So i guess the cars will have to drive themselves in the future.

"When they are symbolic of power, decadence and money, without being so decadent as to generate a large clamour of public backlash..."

I believe Arnold did this with the Humvee, later to become the Hummer. I don't recall (not total) any large scale public backlash at the time. Of course, these days many critters (Cats included), denounce these large urban 4-wheelers.

I'd say it would be something like (trying to remember name) Jonny Cabs from "Total Recall"

As, then they don't have to watch the road while talking to their friends, the mirror doesn't have to be readjusted when they are applying makeup.

Also they won't have to worry about the driver hitting on them.

I would prefer that she used her card in a public transit system which would leave roads free for important uses and not clogged with status symbols dropping off children or carrying shopping, I can sesign a card for her. If she really wants a set of wheels, I can design a bicycle for her.

Due to global warming:

a) the roads that most people currently drive on will be under water.

b) too late, governments will ban the use of engines producing greenhouse gases.

Her car will be a gondola.

There will be a global revival of opera.
