Engineering an Overpopulated Future

Posted February 07, 2008 7:57 AM

By 2050, nine billion people may inhabit planet Earth — three billion more than present. How will this surge in population — and the resulting strain on all resources, including food — affect the way engineers design and build our future cities?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Building & Construction, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Building & Construction today.

Given that nine billion people will defecate every day, that we have already destroyed (almost) every source of clean water with current methods of disposal (water based); research is needed to come up with reusable methods ie biodigesters, composting toilets, etc. that will work in all cases, ie apartment buildings, office towers, or individual situations such as rural, family homes, and other institutions. This should go a long way towards fuel production, replenishing our soil base, and preserving our clean water for drinking. Thanks CG.

Very few peole pine for the time before engineering and very few people will be able to do without engineers in the future. If you have ever read The Time Machine (H G Wells) you might think again about the profession that will keep the future going.
