Will NIF Finish Hurt Industry?

Posted February 20, 2008 8:18 AM

It's been only two and a half years since the future of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) appeared to be in doubt. The monies initially provided would barely even cover shut down costs, let alone support the ongoing construction of the NIF, slated to go online in 2010. The project survived, however, and at last report some 96 of the eventual 192 beamlines were operational. With construction scheduled for completion in mid 2009, the cash cow is dying off, folks. What does that mean for the photonics industry that's been providing gain media, nonlinear crystals, large and small optics, coatings, and more for the past ten years?

Apparently it means that most, if not all, of the infrastructure (the vine) will die off with the project (the melon). A few shoots may be robust enough to survive for the production of products for other projects, but is it not typical of current political "thinking" (if that term is even appropriate) to spend money to start something, but stop short of finishing it? Almost exactly halfway, in fact. And if finished, will operations be funded?

A modest suggestion: in the next election cycle(s), do not vote for anyone suspected of Luddite tendencies.
