Strangelets in the Night

Posted April 14, 2008 8:23 AM

Physicists expect great things from the Large Haldron Collider (LHC) when it becomes operational at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, this summer. The facility will simulate conditions less than a billionth of a second after the big bang and help answer questions about particle mass. Others expect bad things and seek to shut down the world's most powerful particle smasher in a U.S. District Court lawsuit contending that the LHC could create killer strangelets, affecting ordinary matter in a chain reaction leading to mini-black holes and altering life as we know it. CERN and U.S. contributors to the project intend to proceed as planned. Is there a basis for safety concern here, or just a case of massive over-reaction?

There is always fear when people face the unknown.

This has been the same story since the dawn of history and will continue as long as there is ignorance.

I suspect life as we know it WILL be altered - but only due to an increase in our understanding the universe as we don't yet know it. Bad things? Only if less ignorance can be construed as 'bad'!

Personally, I would like a front row seat when that thing comes on line and results start to come in. I know "results" is a relative thing (pun not intended) because it will take much time to decipher collisions.

Anyway, I'm excited about the LHC!

Lets form a cheerleading squad for the LHC. (Chant with rhythm).

"Gimmie an "L"!

Gimmie an "H"!

Gimmie a "C"!

Nay-sayers, doom-sayers

Don't you see

We all support the LHC!"

Cheers,

-John
