Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Cool Cars: This 289 Cobra is the Real Deal

Posted April 27, 2008 12:01 AM by dstrohl

Get back from lunch today and see everybody standing around this Cobra that had just come off the lift in the Hemmings Sibley shop. Okay, so it's a 289, which is cool, but what's the big deal? Four Webers, okay, that makes it cooler.

Shelby's original 289 Cobra has some nice subtle lines that are lacking in the later big-block version and would be my personal choice in a Cobra. Owning a 289 Cobra is a sign of a connoisseur, rather than a "self-indulgent wanker with too much bloody money".

Now that things cool!

It's funny though, with all the "FFR" replica's on the road (being a New England based business), the average Joe will likely mistake that original for a replica. I'm considering a FFR Cobra. My rationalization is becoming, "better get it now before gas becomes cost prohibitive or obsolete."

Hmmm...so if a real Cobra gets mistaken for a replicar, then a replicar should be as easily mistaken for a real one, so which is the best bang for the buck? Well, D'OH! The Cobra, of course - it's a COBRA! Hell-O!

Check out this site. These guy's are about 45min from me, so I see quite a few on the road. You can choose to take the inexpensive route and use a donor mustang or spend all your wallet has to offer, going 427 and all. At least request the free info DVD.

This forum should help answer any questions. I'm no expert on them, just a drooling spectator.
