Semis and Photovoltaics – A Fit?

Posted May 20, 2008 8:36 AM

The idea of pursuing photovoltaic (PV) technology is quickly becoming a topic of interest in Silicon Valley, as the semiconductor industry is eager to take on solar cell development and production. Several prominent semiconductor outfits have already started to position themselves in the solar cell market by acquiring human, intellectual, and equipment capital. Is the solar cell market a viable opportunity for semiconductor manufacturers? Can semiconductor equipment be easily converted for solar cell production or does a solar cell production line require a serious capital equipment investment? Currently, what are the most used substrates for photovoltaic devices?

Purity of silicon required is a difference. The two are competeing for feedstock already.

The idea of change of scale from "our product is the size of a stamp," to "Our product is the size of a newspaper" is likelier to be troublesome than any of the other technology issues.

Scale changes are always a pain in a culture.

And in Accounting.

"Scale changes are always a pain in a culture." Not to mention in fish and reptiles as well--OOF!I think "vermin" has infected my operating system

what if semi companies don't rescale their product but rescale the energy opposite, so instead of receiving the suns rays widespread, narrow them into a beam with some sort of mirror array, or lens that then shines on a small, very pure photovoltaic, thus the semi companies don't have to "rescale" just have to use additional "tools" to rescale the energy... and provide cooling needed for absorbing that much energy

Great questions, but for an industry that focuses at the atomic/molecular level routinely, big lenses/mirrors etc are likely to be a difficult transition. I'm sure there is some threshold of power density too, after which the silicon melts (think laptop on your lap all evening- Yikes!) but You raise excellent questions.
