Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Dump the Minivan. Bring Me a Boonie Bug!

Recently, I discovered several equally awesome box-type VW-based proto-mini-vans. For example, the Boonie Bug, pictured above, for which one can apparently still buy plans for $65. A modified version also allegedly had some screen time in Total Recall, though the Internet Movie Car Database doesn't have a listing for that wonderful piece of early 1990s cinema.

If you look at the whole article and go to the website link, you will see some hideous retro designs that look like they're are straight off the drawing boards of AMC.

There was a good reason AMC went out of business. Interesting concept, but the execution looks to be 40 years old. I wonder if the Phoenix comes with stabilizer jacks when the tent is deployed, to reduce the 'rockin' ?

Robert Q. Riley would do well to update the designs and pitch the 'Back to the Future' look. Forget safety, the V-dub μ-bus was not exactly the poster child for front seat occupant crash protection. But, to each his own. I ride motorbikes in which the only safety feature is the gray matter contained within my brain bucket.

I bought plans for the Brubaker Box...a similar vehicle that was built on a bug chassis...never built it...yet
