Can Sustainability Be Profitable?

Posted August 29, 2008 8:00 AM

Several industrial processing and manufacturing Web sites are hosting columns that discuss sustainable development, with competing opinions about the benefits of government energy legislation. Some companies, like carpet maker Interface, Inc., have long embraced the green movement as good business, but others are strugging to match profits with environmental responsibility. What are the keys to turning an organization around? Are energy laws helping or hindering some industries?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Industrial Processing Equipment, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Industrial Processing Equipment today.

"Are energy laws helping or hindering some industries?"

I think the ethanol from corn legislation has proven that beyond any inkling of doubt. When I get gas which does not have the ethanol my vehicle gets better mileage...period.

As for the Carbon Credits ideas, it perverts and sidesteps the real issues.

Damn, there I go "whining" again!

Hello Bill,

You are right Ethanol does not have the same energy output as Oil fuels.

The problem as I see it is that we still rely upon Steam engine mechanics to convert energy into motion forces.

The world once was captive of piston mechanics but now faces change like the horse breeders did with the invention of the piston engine.

No new invention is of of any good if it cannot be brought to market.

The policital forces oposing change from piston engine mechanics are many and great but like the horse breeders of past their days are numbered.

Here in Australia the Polititics are for change so long as the old ways are mantained which makes it hard for modern energy systems to come on line.

Imagine if you will a car engine having only one moving part and able to go further and produce more power using Ethanol or Methane gas than a Oil fueled piston engine.

Now ask ask yourself which car engine maker would wish to see such competition to their piston engines.

Now ask yourself which Politician would barack for such change and expect not to receive a negative election campaign from piston engine makers.

Cheers

Peter
