Economic Worries Displace Environmental Concerns

Posted September 07, 2008 8:00 AM

A recent UK survey showed that in the last year economic concerns had displaced environmental issues as the top subject. Support for the environment as the main issue dropped from 19% to 8%. The economy is now the biggest concern for 20%. The switch was dramatic, but will it be permanent?

I don't mean to sound flippant, but it's hard to worry about an abstract concept such as "the environment" when you're concened about making ends meet. Let me share a tale of two school districts near where I live. School District A is in a weathy town with a healthy tax base. School District B is in an old mill town whose better days have passed. School District A is concerned that the new elementary school is "green" enough. School District B is concerned that the roof on the middle school may cave in, and just wishes that it has some "green" (in the form of dollars) to repair it.

Yup...you hit the nail on the head.

Sales of organic and free range food are falling back too.

Who will pay £7 for a chicken when you can get a factory farmed one for £4? (me actually...I've been in one of those factory farms...eughhh)

Energy prices have been hiked by 30% despite obscene profits and what does a so called 'Labour' government do about it? SFA... they should cap the price rises or re-nationalise the Energy sector...there is huge profiteering going on while the Pr men shed crocodile tears.
We should all start bypassing our meters (Kris made me say that)

Hi Del,

Gas prices hiked to 30%, I'm glad you have brought that one up!!!!

We have been constantly told over the past two years that the price of gas is linked to that of oil, but there seems to be a mystery here because oil prices have gone down by 20 to 25%!!!!

So my question which is quite simple is, Why have gas prices not sunk in line with the price of oil????????????????

Spencer.

In actuality, the two are inextricably linked, even to the (apologies to the etymology thread of last week) origin of the words. ECO from the Greek, referring to home. Thus, ecology, the study of our home and economics, the management of our home. Home, of course, in the larger sense of where we all live, not the house you reside in. The environment and the financial health of our society both affect us all. And if either fails to support us, then our society crumbles around our ears.
