Is Nanotech Dangerous?

Posted September 09, 2008 8:39 AM

The U.S. EPA and National Science Foundation are handing out grants for research into the health and environmental effects of nanotechnology. Negative results could impose new requirements or limitations on manufacturers. Do you think the effects could strangle the market? Is your company worried? What measures are you taking to protect employee/customer health and the environment?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Nano Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Nano Technology today.

Didn't they kind of go over this question about the possible link between cell phones and cancer? I don't see anyone throwing their cell phones away because of it. Administrations are kind of fuzzy on the effects of devices anyway - they don't even know what they are talking about. I don't think anything could stifle the noise that nanotechnology is making!

Yes, nano tubes are as dangerous as asbestos, so we just need some regulations to workk with it.

yes, pursuant to the latest banano technology, the aswarthian cryptic fibrosis could cause irreversible damage to cells as we know them today. please bee careful when ascribing banano technology or using it in an irrelevant form

From what I've heard the problem is one of chemistry. Many of these nano-materials are made of materials we consider completely harmless. However, if you consider that, in nature, they never or rarely occur at size that will be common in nano-materials then you have to investigage.

A hypothetical example: cells in your body have a semi-permiable membrane. Like a filter the membrane allows particles of one size to pass but larger particles cannot. If you then introduce a nano-particle of a compound which is normally safe but occurs at naturally in much larger combinations of molecules then you can't just assume it is still safe.

The EPA kept making the argument that various materials were normally safe so there was no need to study the effects of that material at a nano-scale. Obviously at a smaller level the particles can make it into new places in our body and bind to new sites on our cells. Study if not regulation is necessary.

However, I would agree that nothing is going to stop nano-materials. Slow it down, maybe, stop it no way.

EPA should go through the book " Nanotechnology - The fun and easy way of learning the science of matters smallest thing - by Booker". We should here understand that unlike classical physics which is important at the everyday life nanoscience is the field where Quantum physics plays a vital role. This property of nanosize materials will be useful in future in various areas like body armour to medicines, faster computing to energy efficiency. Like all new technology there is an inherent speculation of the ill effects but that is all a hoax.

Physicist and scientist will not deter from creating a new world where life will be more simpler and clean. Regarding manufacturing of nanomaterials very few companies in developed countries are doing it but this negative roumour will not hamper their productivity much. We as the users of the upcoming technology should read about the technology and then only give our views.....so that no one can fool us!!!!
