How Good is RFID?

Posted September 11, 2008 8:07 AM

Automatic identification technologies get a lot of press, in this newsletter and elsewhere, and have provided major benefits to material handling operations for decades. Backers of the latest form — radio frequency identification (RFID) — promise even greater benefits. Have you used RFID in your operations? Are the promises real or overblown?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Material Handling, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Material Handling today.

The promises are very real. Wal-Mart is currently using the system with great success, I hear.

The concerns at the moment are that RFID works so well, we are at possible risk of having our privacy infringed upon by use of scanners reading the personal information imbedded on RFID chips on future drivers liscenses and other items, from as far away as 300 feet; see Scientific American issue on Privacy.

The promises are real.

After 9/11/2001, the plant where I was working had me install vehicle security gates. We issued "credit card" sized personal RFID badges to employees that gave them access to the protected areas. Placing the RFID badge against the driver's side window of a vehicle allowed gate entry with a valid reading. This system would work to about 2 M (6 feet) without problems.
